SPEAR AND GRAPPLE ASSEMBLY – RECOVERY TOOL

The spear and grapple assembly is design for recovery of diamond drill rods that are left down the hole. Attach the spear and grapple assembly to the rod string being used to lower it, and lower it to the desired depth. It is recommended that a 2 foot or 4 foot conventional rod be used to extend the spear and grapple assembly further from the rod string being used to lower it. This will allow the spear and grapple assembly to be lowered into the rods being recovered, making for a better opportunity to engage.

To Engage:

Simply push the spear and grapple assembly into the rods being recovered. When you are sure the assembly is well into the rods, pull back/up on the rod string. Pulling back/up will cause the tapers on the mandrel to expand the grapple and allow it to positively engage.

To Release:

Once the rods and spear and grapple assembly have been recovered out of the hole, the spear and grapple assembly can be released by bumping down the assembly and rotating to the right. This right-hand rotation allows the mandrel to move up through the grapple thereby placing the grapple against the release ring and putting the spear in release position. Combined right-hand rotation with straight upward pull will release the spear from the recovered rods. Continue with slow, right-hand rotation until the spear and grapple assembly is clear.
